I Like Work
Don’t get me wrong: I luxuriate in a couple unscheduled days, time for activities and relaxation not driven by schedules and to-do lists.
And vacations? Important. Although I need to listen to my own advice and take one—I’ve gone without for too long—taking time away from work and everyday life improves physical and mental wellbeing.
Yet I like working.
I like the feeling of purpose—the vision and the goals and the path to achieving them—that work provides. I like the challenges work presents along the way (well, most of the time). I like the feeling of accomplishment that overcoming obstacles and achieving milestones give me. I enjoy the people I encounter and with whom I work—the conversation, collaboration, shared experience. I enjoy the businesses I have created. I relish the mental stimulation they provide.
And, though sometimes shuttling it feels fantastic, I like the structure to my days—the rhythm and flow. Without any structure, I likely would still have things to do, people to see, and places to go. Yet I doubt I’d get them done as efficiently. Or with such a feeling of soundness and purpose in what I do and when I do it. (And, knowing me, I’d figure out a way to get a structure, and fast. After all, what’s entrepreneurship than building one’s own structure?)
